This course focuses on developing students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in ways that extend beyond the classroom. Literature is studied not only as language and narrative, but as a reflection of human experience. Because literary texts often emerge from historical and cultural contexts different from our own, some language and ideas may not align with contemporary norms. Students are expected to approach all texts, discussions, and class experiences with maturity, respect, and thoughtful consideration.
The discussion of literature is itself an art and requires the clear expression of ideas both orally and in writing. Throughout this yearlong course, students examine how key political, economic, and social issues in American history are reflected in American literature. Based on the premise that we can best understand a people by the stories they tell, students analyze what it means to be “American” through literary works ranging from the Puritan era to the Postmodern age.
