September 15 & 18, 2025
Agenda
Starter: 9/15 & 9/18
In Act 1 of The Importance of Being Earnest, Jack and Algernon both pretend to be someone they are not: Jack invents “Ernest,” and Algernon invents “Bunbury.” These lies allow them to escape responsibility, impress others, and create comic situations.
To see how this theme of deception plays out in the real world, you will read a short news article about someone who pretended to be something they weren’t. Just like in the play, these situations involve lies, mistaken identities, and unexpected consequences.
After reading, you’ll summarize what happened, explain the outcome, and then predict what kinds of deceptions or absurd twists you think Wilde might use in Act 2.
Read The Importance of Being Earnest: Act Two and complete the assignment.
