Agenda
Starter: Victorian Charades
Directions: Read the excerpt “Charades” from Etiquette of Good Society by Lady Colin Campbell (1893). You can read this excerpt individually or as a table.
Once you and your table have familiarized yourselves with how charades was played during the Victorian era, spend the next ten (10) minutes playing a game of Victorian Charades as a table. Ensure you are playing the game the way Victorians played it, not as it is played today!
Once I have called time, each person should reflect and respond to these questions individually:
How did you feel about playing Victorian Charades? Was it vastly different than the style of charades you’re used to playing? Why or why not?
Based on this experience, how do you think household games have changed or stayed the same since the Victorian times?
What social games do you play in your home with family and friends?
What is the purpose or value of these games in social interactions? Has this changed since Victorian times?
