  1. Starter: Quick-Write

    • Directions: For your starter today, reflect on the question: “What does it mean to be an American?”
      To earn points for this starter, you must write for the entire time (2 minutes on Canvas).
      Explain (it doesn’t have to be formal) how you would answer this question.

  2. Complete the disclosure activity.

    • Decide: As a table group, decide which 2-3 pieces from the disclosure are the most important to remember. What information will help you be successful in this course? Are there any policies or procedures that you find unusual? What aspects of school do you personally struggle with, and how can the policies/procedures in the disclosure impact those struggles?

    • Agree: After a brief discussion, come to a group consensus and agree on the 2-3 most important elements. Take a couple of sticky notes from the middle of the table and write those important elements on individual sticky notes. WRITE EVERYBODY’S NAMES ON THE STICKY NOTES.

      • 2 important elements: 2 sticky notes

      • 3 important elements: 3 sticky notes

    • Post: Send one group member to post your sticky notes on the assigned whiteboard divider.

  • Log on Canvas

  • Click on today’s module

  • Access the assignment: “What does it mean to be an American? [videos]”

  • Open the attached document

  • While you watch video #1, answer questions 1 & 2.

  • While you watch video #2, answer questions 3, 4, 5.

4. Assignment: “What is an American?”

  • Directions: Read “What is an American?” by Crèvecoeur. After you read, complete the worksheet.

5. Exit Ticket: 8/16 & 8/20

  • Directions: Find the assignment on today’s module called “Exit Ticket: 8/16 & 8/20.” Answer the following question: How has your perception of what an American is changed from the beginning of class? What influenced the change in your view and why?
